This is an experiment which was designed to study the organization of bions from mass free orgone. Reich was studying the luminosity of orgone in samples of bion water (see below) in a series of experiments. One sample stayed in the open air and froze. When thawed, the sample contained thick flakes. Under the microscope and in magnification of 3000X, Reich observed that the flakes contained bionous vesicles which contracted and expanded, while luminating strongly. He wrote about the experiment: “From 19 From 1936 to 1945, bions were prepared exclusively from fully organized matter (humus, grass, iron, sand, carbon, etc.). The advance represented by Experiment XX consists of the fact that now orgone energy vesicles, possessing all the properties of living matter, also can be obtained from mass-free orgone energy.” (W. Reich, The Cancer Biopathy, Farrar, Strauss & Giroux, p. 63).
Bion water: Sieved garden soil is boiled in distilled water or ordinary tap water for one hour, or autoclaved for half an hour at 120o C. and 15 lbs. pressure. The water is filtered off from the boiled earth, crystal clear. We call this fluid “bion water.”
Bion water, when thawed, displays during microscopic observation thick flakes and in magnification of 3000x Reich observed that these flakes contained bionous vesicles that luminate intensely and show distinct pulsatory movements of expansion and contraction. He was thus able to produce bions which did not originate from organized matter, since bion water was sufficiently filtered to exclude any traces of organic or inorganic matter and contains only water. Reich believed that those bions originated from mass free orgone, which during freezing was condensed and “materialized” in the flakes he was observing.
This experiment, according to Reich, indirectly proved the existence of immaterial and cosmic orgone energy and directly proved the ability of orgone, under certain circumstances (in this case freezing), to create matter (the flakes). Mainly, however, it proved orgone’s innate biogenetic action, since this matter, under microscopic observation, displayed characteristics of living functioning (bioluminescence, intense motility and plusatory alternation of contraction and expansion).
The “Heraclitus” Laboratory of Microscopic Research is conducting several bion experiments and has repeated Experiment XX multiple times, verifying Reich’s microscopic observations. The Laboratory’s experimental research and our personal views will be published in the future.
